Podcast Series: Word On The Street

This series explores themes and issues that affect the daily lives of young people living in the UK. Streetlife is a youth work charity that supports people aged 16-25 in Blackpool and the North West, who may first access the service when experiencing homelessness. 

We are passionate about youth empowerment and elevating the voices of young people. In this series of podcasts young people share their own experiences, thoughts on society, barriers they face and how community plays a huge part in this.

Facilitated by local spoken word artist and youth worker ⁠⁠Nathan Parker⁠⁠ young people share the challenges and barriers they have faced, along with calls for change. It is an eye opening and heartwarming discussion about the reality of finding your way in today’s world and the difference that small acts of kindness can make.

Episode 6: Services for Mental Health Need Funding

In this episode young person, Blue bravely shares their personal journey navigating mental health challenges with duty worker Steph and Therapeutic Activities Coordinator James.  

The trio discuss everything from the importance of seeking support to Blues own experience accessing various local mental health services and the impact of prioritising wellbeing.  

We are incredibly proud of Blue for sharing their story and hope that opening the conversation about mental health may empower other young people to seek support. You are not alone.

Episode 5: Its just too easy to get

In this episode Paul bravely shares his own bad experience with Ketamine and discusses the potential harm caused by this highly addictive drug.

In this episode Serena, 18 describes her experience of first accessing the Streetlife Shelter, how she felt, the support she has received and the barriers she faced in accessing the private rental market in Blackpool.

 Serena opens up about the reality of homelessness for young people and celebrates receiving the keys to her own home!

Episode 3: Everyone Deserves a Place They Can Call Home

In this episode young people and the team discuss their experience of the housing system in Blackpool. We explore the barriers faced by young people in accessing suitable accommodation such as age limits, the need for working guarantors, several months rent in advance in a rental market of low availability and high demand.

Episode 2: The Way Things Have Always Been

In this episode young people and the team discuss their experience of the education system. How relevant is the current mainstream education journey? Where is the balance between academic learning and practical experience? How inclusive is the system?

In this episode young people living in Blackpool share their experience of navigating the world without a support system. From homelessness, mental health and stereotypes to community support and plans for the future.
